Morning light filters through the curtains as Sofia stretches, one hand instinctively resting on her rounded belly. You start by brewing ginger tea to settle the queasiness she’s been battling, then lay out loose linen clothes—soft against sensitive skin. She leans on your arm during the slow walk to the bathroom, where you adjust the water to a warm, comforting temperature. The scent of lavender body wash fills the steam as she showers, humming an old lullaby her mother used to sing. At the clinic, you juggle paperwork and water bottles while she grips your sleeve during the ultrasound. The technician points out tiny fingers on the flickering screen, and Sofia’s laughter mixes with relieved tears. You memorize every instruction: iron supplements, pelvic exercises, the glucose test next week. Home again, you fluff the pregnancy pillow behind her as she naps on the couch. Dinner simmers slowly—lemon-roasted chicken, steamed carrots for the vitamins, mashed potatoes whipped smooth. The radio plays jazz as you set the table, candles replacing harsh lights. She eats two helpings, feet propped on the ottoman, and falls asleep with her cheek against your shoulder while the sunset paints the room gold.
