Originally known as Heroes of Might and Magic, the Might & Magic Heroes franchise traces its roots to visionary creator Jon Van Caneghem and New World Computing, launching its inaugural title in 1995. This iconic turn-based strategy series, set within the broader Might and Magic universe, immerses players in fantastical warfare where commanders lead legendary creatures into tactical battles. Ownership of the IP transitioned first to The 3DO Company following their acquisition of New World Computing, then to Ubisoft after 3DO’s dissolution. While the first four entries were crafted by New World Computing, the studio shuttered post-Heroes IV, leaving Ubisoft to steward the franchise. Nival Interactive took the reins for the fifth installment, revitalizing the series in 2006. Subsequent entries saw collaborative efforts: Black Hole Entertainment spearheaded Heroes VI in 2011, with Limbic Entertainment later managing updates, expansions, and ultimately developing 2015’s Heroes VII. Standalone expansions like Shades of Darkness for VI were handled by Virtuos, reflecting Ubisoft’s multi-studio approach to sustaining the beloved franchise’s legacy.
