The mall buzzed around her, neon lights flickering against polished floors as Sofia paused mid-stride—there, on a stranger’s shoulder, danced a tattooed butterfly, its wings shimmering under the fluorescents like stained glass. Her fingers brushed her own bare collarbone, imagining ink instead of skin. Butterflies were too obvious, maybe. Stars? Too scattered. A flower, then—something bold, unapologetic, a peony unfurling across her ribs, thorns and all. The artist nodded when she described it, sketching lines that made her pulse jump. Afterward, she drifted into a boutique, the air thick with citrus-sweet perfume. She left with a gauzy sundress the color of crushed raspberries, leather sandals that slapped cheerfully against tile, and a straw bag slung over her new tattoo, its edges peeking out like a secret she couldn’t quite hide.
