Elena’s eyes lit up as Sarah emerged from the shallows, seawater glistening on her iridescent tail. “You’re really doing it?” Elena grinned, tossing a satin-lined cloak toward her friend. Sarah laughed, the sound like tide pools catching sunlight, and let her tail melt into legs as she wrapped herself in the fabric. “Only for you,” she said, shaking out her turquoise curls. The two hurried to a tucked-away boutique, its windows draped with silks and seashell charms. Elena insisted Sarah try a gown first—slippery cobalt chiffon that cascaded like waves, paired with a corset laced with pearls. Sarah countered by threading starfish pins into Elena’s chestnut braids, then tugged her toward a rack of sunbeam-yellow dresses. “Your turn,” she teased. Elena’s outfit came together: a high-necked tulle skirt layered over shorts for chasing seagulls, topped with a cropped jacket embroidered with tiny anchors. They swapped sandals—strappy silver for Sarah, rugged boots for Elena—and debated makeup until the shopkeeper intervened, dusting Sarah’s cheeks with shimmdering scales and lining Elena’s eyes with charcoal. By sunset, they stood on the pier, transformed. Sarah’s necklace of moonstones caught the fading light, while Elena’s charm bracelet—a tiny ship’s wheel—clinked as she waved toward the horizon. “Next time,” Sarah said, squeezing her hand, “you visit *my* world.” Elena grinned. “Deal. But tomorrow—let’s mess it all up at the carnival.”
